When bass fishing, it is easy to get carried away with the excitement of getting a bite and more often than not rookie fisherman will make big hooksets like they see the pros doing on TV. While this may work for a few types of lures such as crankbaits and swimbaits, this hookset will actually cause you to lose fish when fishing a drop shot. This is due to the fact that when fishing a drop shot you are using a small hook and when you do a monster hookset with such a small hook, you will often yank the hook out of the bass’s mouth. In order to avoid this problem and get more fish in the boat when fishing a drop shot, I recommend that you do a very small hookset and just barely lift your rod tip when you get a bite. As bass often times hook themselves, this small hookset will work to ensure that the hook penetrates skin and stays on, without the risk of yanking the hook out of the fish’s mouth.
