As winter slowly comes to an end, bass will begin to awake from their winter slumber and move into their pre-spawn pattern. During this time of the year, the bass will make runs from deep water to the shallows to go and scout out potential spawning grounds. As I mentioned in a previous tip, bass will most likely be around structure that runs from the shallows into deeper water. However, I have also noticed that the bass tend to hang around steep drop offs. These drop offs give the bass a chance to make quick runs between depths and also gives them a place to ambush unsuspecting prey. I have had the most success in catching these bass by slowly working a soft plastic up these drop offs and trying to get a lure in front of their faces as they make these runs.
