When fishing for spawning bass, it is extremely important to watch your line and make sure that the bass has swallowed your lure before setting the hook. This is because during the spawning months, bass will often just nudge a bait out of its nest rather than bite it. If you set the hook as soon as you feel something hit your bait, you will find you will miss a lot of hookups and often scare the bass. As a rule of thumb, I suggest you count to 2 or 3 before setting the hook. This will give the bass time to pick the bait up after it has nudged it and will greatly increase your chances of hooking into a monster bass.
